Over the past few weeks, several people in the North West have noticed some changes to the taste of their tap water. People have said that their water tastes ‘a lot stronger than usual’ during lockdown – and some have even been left worried. To set things straight, the ECHO asked United Utilities, the water company which serves almost seven million people across the North West, what could explain these comments.
The company explained people might be noticing slight differences in their tap water at the moment. A tiny amount (The WHO have said this should increase during the pandemic) of chlorine is added to tap water to ensure it “stays clean and germ free”, and United Utilities said no extra chlorine was being added to tap water currently.
However, the company said more people being at home during the day could be having an impact on its taste. It is all to do with “chlorine traces” and how quickly it dissipates after the water is treated. Apparently, as more people are at home using water it is possible that the time between water treatment and it reaching that tap is shorter than usual.
